About

I grew up in Duarte and attended Duarte High School, graduating in 1975.  I started this site because I wanted to celebrate all of the great people from Duarte.

Hi – who are you? One of the pictures of Varsity Cross Country has my brother’s picture in it – R. Henke. I enjoyed reading your stories and know a lot of the people. Curious as to who you are. I’m Cheryl Henke, Class of ’73.

    1. Hi, Cheryl. Thanks for your question. Name is Mike Walgenbach. I created this blog a couple of years ago, but really have not maintained it. This DuarteRock blog is a WordPress.com version of a blog I created a few years back called DuarteThroughTheYears. That no longer exists, but this most recent blog (linked below) does. You know I knew your brother only from a distance. Upper classmen were akin to men and capable and as such legends in my 9th grade imagination. The upper classmen on the cross country team, guys like Tom and Allen Ashcraft, Marc Green and others were like professional athletes to me. I didn’t bother them. I was not in their league. I do recall your name being spoken of admirably and with jealousy both for beauty and brains. When they would have me, I hung out with Jeff Sadowski, Jim Flores, Rick Stevens, Manual Zalamea, Al Madrigal–athletes each of them. Thanks for your interest. http://duarterocks.blogspot.com/.

  3. Don Lindfors

Mike, i just stumbled across this. This picture at the top of this page piqued my interest because the guy on the far right of the picture is my Dad, John Lindfors! He was the Music Teacher for Duarte Schools from 1953 to 1971 and helped write the incorporation papers for Duarte and was the First Vice Mayor. I have never seen this picture and would love to get a copy. Don Lindfors, DHS class of ’73

  4. Thanks, Don, for identifying your dad and for noting that he was the Music Teacher for Duarte. Love that! And that he wrote the incorporation documents for Duarte! Fantastic! Excellent details!! Thank you!!

I’d like to take this moment to say how much of an honor and a privilege it was to be married to my wife Jean Belle Hewitt Greeran For 38 1/2 years we married in May 22, 1982, till her passing of December 5, 2020. She was my moral compass and in good and bad times she was always there for me! I think she got her strength from her parents Fred and Louise Hewitt. who were Always so supportive in all her activities which included baton twirling for Duarte and citrus College. Louise gave her heart and soul along with Fred Hewitt to Duarte community services. As a young family Fred and Louise would take their family up to hidden Valley in San Gabriel Mountains where they donated many hours and volunteer work to build sleeping quarters for Girl Scouts.
Thank you to My special love,Jean Bell Hewitt Greeran.
    Gerard Thomas Greeran
