Duarte Library, Recessed in Bank of America Parking Lot, 1955

This is not the library on Buena Vista Avenue.  This is the smaller library recessed in the Bank of America parking lot, located at 1430 East Huntington Drive, Duarte at the corner of Huntington and Brycedale.  I’d only been in here a handful of times.

Calisphere writes,

Duarte Library, circa 1955. Duarte Library began service on an established basis in 1950. In 1954, a storefront building in Bank of America Square was made available. Since the location was more central, more patrons came and circulation increased.

  1. Thank you for the photo! This was my primary library before the one on Buena Vista was built. I spent many hours and days here in grade school, mostly trying to learn algebra from the library’s scant math shelf. One of Duarte’s few remaining orange groves was situated just south of the library, and my best friend Dale G. lived just a few doors down on Brycedale Avenue. The houses are all gone now, but the brick library building is still there.

    1. Great memory, Bill. Not sure what the building is used for today. At one time, I think it was
a used clothing/thrift store. And then it reverted back to a gov’t building, library annex or something. Have not kept track of the businesses in there.

I remember going there often as well Mike on our bicycles during summertime picking out Nancy Drew detective stories. Simple buy good memories. I know it certainly didn’t feel like an amazing source of literature/knowledge compared to the LA city library at the time.
